Located along the north shore of Maui, the town of Haiku-Pauwela is east of Paia and west of Hana, Wailua, and Keanae. While Haiku-Pauwela is the town’s name, the entire area is more commonly known simply as Haiku. This sleepy northshore community is near the beginning of the infamous Road to Hana, also known as Hana Highway 36 which cuts through Haiku. Haiku is steeped in Maui’s sugar history. In fact, it was the Haiku Mill that processed the sugar of the Haiku Sugar Company beginning in 1858. Just over a decade later the Alexander and Baldwin Company was formed and their legacy lives on in the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum nearby. After the Haiku Mill closed Haiku grew traction as a pineapple plantation and its former cannery is now the Haiku Marketplace shopping center.
Haiku has a very rugged coastline and the closest beach is Maliko Bay Beach. That said, Nahiku Cove is an incredible place to enjoy the ocean waves powerfully crashing onto the shore amidst raw natural beauty. The aforementioned Haiku Mill is a popular historic attraction that can be explored with an appointment, and other Haiku points of interest include Ke’anae Arboretum, Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park, Twin Falls Hike and Waterfalls, and the popular Na’ili’ili-Haele Trailhead Hike in the Bamboo Forest. Along those lines, restaurants in Haiku include Jaws Country Store, Veg Out, Nuka Japanese restaurant, Colleen’s Restaurant in the Cannery, and many outside food-truck-style eateries at the Haiku Town Center and Marketplace.
Roughly fourteen miles east of Kahului, Haiku real estate is diverse and includes off-the-grid homes, custom estates, and plantation-style homes. Likewise, real estate in Haiku includes properties of many ages, architectural styles, floor plans, and sizes for homebuyers in all seasons of life. For all these reasons, this family-oriented, surfing community is popular among water sports enthusiasts, artists, and other free-spirited people.
