In fact, it was the Haiku Mill that processed the sugar of the Haiku Sugar Company beginning in 1858. Just over a decade later the Alexander and Baldwin Company was formed and their legacy lives on in the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum nearby. After the Haiku Mill closed Haiku grew traction as a pineapple plantation and its former cannery is now the Haiku Marketplace shopping center.

Haiku has a very rugged coastline and the closest beach is Maliko Bay Beach. That said, Nahiku Cove is an incredible place to enjoy the ocean waves powerfully crashing onto the shore amidst raw natural beauty. The aforementioned Haiku Mill is a popular historic attraction that can be explored with an appointment, and other Haiku points of interest include Ke’anae Arboretum, Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park, Twin Falls Hike and Waterfalls, and the popular Na’ili’ili-Haele Trailhead Hike in the Bamboo Forest.
